“The storm is what happened. The Abyss is where you got lost. White Passage is how you find your way again.”
—Thomas Minieri

The Periplus
A Guide to the World of White Passage
Explore the places, terms, travelers, instruments, and rules of navigation that shape the journey from Shattering to the Far Side.
The Shattering
When the old map breaks.
The moment something happens that contradicts an assumption you were using to understand your life. The event may hurt deeply—but the Shattering begins when it also changes what you thought was true.
The Abyss
When you lose your sense of direction.
The Abyss is not simply pain, grief, or uncertainty. It is the point where the old map no longer works and you no longer know what to believe, what matters, or which way is forward.
Moorings
What has been holding your life together.
Moorings are the relationships, roles, beliefs, institutions, and parts of life to which you have tied stability, identity, belonging, security, or meaning. We often discover how much weight they carried only after a line breaks.
Jettison
Release what can no longer be carried.
When unnecessary weight threatens the vessel, it must go overboard. In White Passage, Jettison means releasing fear-driven conclusions, false guarantees, borrowed certainty, misplaced responsibility, control, urgency, or other weight that keeps you trapped in the Abyss—not throwing away what still matters.
Position
Where are you actually?
Before choosing a direction, establish where you are now. Position separates present reality from what used to be true, what you wish were true, and what you fear might be true.
Compass
What still matters?
The Compass is not a perfect life plan. It is the recovery of the relationships, values, commitments, needs, and meanings that still matter after the old map has shattered.
Bearings
Where are you in relation to what matters?
Bearings connect your current position to reliable reference points. They help you see what remains intact, what has been lost, and where the greatest distance now exists between your life and what matters to you.
Course
Which direction is worth trying?
A Course is a reality-based direction—not a guaranteed destination. You choose the next direction that makes sense from where you are, then allow experience to confirm or correct the map.
White Passage
The crossing where you learn to navigate again.
The White Passage begins when you have enough orientation to start moving. You test the new map against reality, take new fixes, adjust when necessary, and learn that fear, setbacks, hope, and success can change the weather without necessarily changing your direction.
Feeling disoriented is not the same thing as losing orientation.
The Far Side
Where clarity holds.
The Far Side is the point where you are no longer fundamentally lost. You may not have every answer, but you know where you are, what matters, which direction you are moving, and how to check your bearings when conditions change.
It is not the end of life’s journey. It is the point where rebuilding becomes possible.
Landfall
When the next life becomes real.
Landfall is the final threshold of White Passage. Land is visible and reachable. You have not built what comes next yet—but the future is no longer merely theoretical, and the real path can begin.
Passage Records
Travelers of The White Passage
The Passage Records follow recurring travelers through different kinds of Shattering: betrayal, business collapse, illness, faith crisis, career loss, and other disruptions. Their circumstances differ. The deeper navigation problem does not. Their stories reveal how the same White Passage can appear in very different lives.
Standing Orders
Rules of navigation for when conditions change.
Standing Orders are short principles drawn from real seamanship and navigation. They are designed to be remembered when fear, momentum, uncertainty, or changing conditions make clear thinking difficult.
The Captain’s Log
Your record of the passage.
The Captain’s Log guides you through the journey from Shattering to the Far Side. Its 33 entries help you record what happened, what changed, what you discover, what you release, the bearings you recover, and what reality teaches you as you move. It is not simply something you read. It becomes the record of your own crossing.
The Navigator
Someone who helps you find your way without choosing the destination for you.
The Navigator helps establish position, identify reliable reference points, ask better questions, and find a course through uncertain water. The Navigator does not take command of the vessel. You are the captain. White Passage helps you navigate.
Letters From the Far Side
Messages written back across the water by someone who has crossed it.
The chapters of White Passage are written as letters from a captain who has reached the Far Side and can now see patterns that were impossible to recognize while he was still inside the storm. He does not write as someone who always knew the answer. He writes as someone who can now say: “I could not see this while I was in it. I can see it from here.”
